Dry forest, savanna and gardens across Guanacaste. It is a tree of poor soils and hot sun and it flowers yellow before the fruit.
What to know
The fruit is the size of a cherry, yellow, thin skinned, with a large seed. It ripens in the rains and is sold fresh by the bag and preserved in syrup in jars. The flavour is unmistakable and has been described as everything from sweet and floral to like old socks, sometimes by the same person. It is part of the taste of the province and worth forming your own opinion on.
